Cheaper Balkberry and SAP services

Blackberry has been becoming popular and also cheaper in Indonesia. Mobile communication provider Excelcom Pratama or XL provides this service with quite competitive pricing (200thousand IDR or 14 EUR per month for Unlimited APN Blackbery + free talk program).
This program is also packaged with handheld Blacberry type 8120 and 8820 (Rp 5.5 Million and 6.8 Million Rupiah).
SAP and Research in Motion (RIM, Canadian company as Blackberry maker) announce that they want change the way of people work which allowing them to tie less to their computer and office network, instead they will rely more on SAP and Blackberry services.

SAP software adapted is CRM (customer relationship management) services through web browser frontend as user interface. Business information such as reports, master data records, maps, videos, more complex business data and GPS-enabled services will be readily available in Blueberry services.

SAP also develops business application for iPhone from Apple. The technology behind this will be probably SAP Netweaver supports and sits under the CRM server.

Download SAP software while sharing connection

I am downloading SAP software using unlimited GPRS connection from Centrin XL, however the bandwith is quite slow but i can still share the connection and open around 5 browser.

In Jakarta and remote area such as Bogor and Sukabumi, this Centrin XL internet connection is quite stable and even faster with bandwith limitation up to 64Kbps (kilo bit not kilo byte). My download using SAP Download manager which connect to http://service.sap.com/swdc (SAP software repositories), this SAP download manager has capability of resuming broken download. In case of antivirus download, I can download around 10-15MB of antivirus update successfully without such download manager and taking around 1 hour.

I also share my GPRS internet connection using Wifi without UTP network cable with following step
- laptop A has unlimited internet connection using GPRS Centrin XL, will share its internet connection into B
- turn off firewall software first
- one time configuration in my wireless network adapter in laptop A: IP configuration , IP address = 192.168.0.1 subnet mask = 255.255.255.0 gateway = empty
- one time configuration in my wireless network adapter in laptop B: IP configuration is automatic
- turn on WiFi in laptop A
- one time configuration in laptop A: create Ad Hoc network NET (device to device) in WiFi with WEP-64 bit personal security and key is abcde
- in laptop A, connect to Wifi network NET
- turn on Wifi in laptop B
- open Wifi manager in laptop B, search Wifi network, add / join / connect to network NET. Laptop B will have IP address 192.168.0.2 automatically
- test from laptop B: ping 192.168.0.1 , this command should have reply not time out.
- run your internet browser (firefox, internet explorer) from laptop B

Making Faster Internet, free and not free

Faster internet connection is important to avoid WWW (world web wait). There are some tools we can try. The secret behind this accelerator tool is compression of any internet content. For text, it could be up to more than 10 times compression, so for 1MB text file, it can be compressed up to 100KB or less. For image, it depends on quality and you can set this quality on the tools.

All you need is to download the accellerator client software, and set the proxy to the program (host 127.0.0.1 local computer and certain port e.g. 8080)

Using two network connection, modem and LAN together

When our LAN connection has no good internet access or limited internet but we need to work such as accessing office servers, probably we have our own internet connection as additional connection. In my case, this internet connection uses modem (GPRS from 3G handphone).

To configure both connection together, we should also consider to modify network routing table in laptop or computer. To configure this we need to

• test LAN connection without modem
• make sure our modem is not dialed up / connected, only our LAN cable
• to test, run menu Start | Run | cmd ENTER | ipconfig /all ENTER
• notice gateway IP address and ping out to this address e.g “ping 10.20.30.1″, the connection is OK if there is reply
• note: in Unix/Linux the command would be ifconfig
• test modem connection without LAN
• make sure our LAN cable is not connected
• use your own procedure to connect the modem to service provider
• after connected, use same procedure for LAN to test the connection
• test modem and LAN
• connect LAN cable to computer, and dial up to internet provider with the modem
• run menu Start | Run | cmd ENTER | ipconfig /all ENTER
• run “route print”
• run “route delete 0.0.0.0″
• run “route add 10.0.0.0 mask 255.0.0.0 10.20.30.1″ to create routing for our LAN to gateway of our office LAN
• run “route add 0.0.0.0 mask 0.0.0.0 200.160.200.1″ to create network routing for our internet connection to gateway of internet provider
• we can copy and paste the above commands with probably there will be change in internet gateway everytime we connect / dial-up again using the modem

accessing 24 hour MSN / yahoo messenger from handphone in Jakarta

I have been 2 years using my phone to access yahoo messenger in Jakarta. The daily cost is relatively cheap, for around 24 hour connection per day I spend 200-400KB a day, this costs IDR 2000-4000 (20-40 cent USD) a day if using GPRS XL (XL Explor post paid package) or CDMA Starone pre-paid package.

My old thera audiovox PDA phone uses CDMA Starone and Agile Messenger.

While Sony Erriccson K610i uses XL Explor post paid and Reporo Messenger. M600i uses Agile Messenger and XL Explor or sometime Centrin-XL unlimited mobile internet package.

Using this combination I can be online everywhere and anytime in Jakarta or even when traveling out of Jakarta hundreds kilometers away.

Indonesia unlimited mobile internet testing (GSM based)

Alhamdulillah . There are finally unlimited GSM mobile internet available in Indonesia for personal usage with affordable pricing, Rp 250-300thousand per month (22-25EUR, i love to use this more stable currency). The technology behind this is GPRS on GSM mobile network, 3G network. As long as you get Excelcom / XL signal as GSM provider. However its bandwith is still limited upto 64Kbps but the link is quite stable (I try Centrin - XL).

So get connected to Internet by your GSM phone/device, PDAphone and laptop everywhere! (still OK in busway transportation, but don’t try it around unsecure public place in Jakarta).

Udah dua hari gue pake produk unlimited wireless internet dari Centrin yg disebut Centrin-XL, hasilnya secara umum adalah

MEMUASKAN

test juga dilakukan kemaren malem sambil menumpang mobil (ini dapet 3G terus) dan juga di rumah lokasi pinggiran Jakarta menggunakan M600i.

Tadinya seb orang awam mau gue tulis memuaskan sekali, tapi gue inget kecepatannya gak terlalu kenceng tapi cukuplah buat liat2 informasi. Lagian lumayan murah dg biaya bulanan 270rb per bulan (termasuk pajak) semasa promosi dan kurang dari 400rb setelah promosi. Sebagai perbandingan Singapur saya pernah subscribe Singnet 70SG per bulan (Rp 420rb)untuk unlimited mobile internet, atau paket lainnya dari M1 sekitar 20SGD(Rp 120rb) tapi limited volume 3GB.

Produk ini hasil kerjasama Centrin dan Excelcom GSM berbasis GPRS dan bisa juga 3G yang dicekek maksimum sampai 64Kbps (64 kilo bit per detik, atau 8KBps / 8 kilo byte per detik). Aktualnya ketika download gue bisa dapet sekitar 8-50Kbps. Dari meter data yang didownload/upload atau received/sent hari kemarin dg waktu koneksi total 9 jam, makan volume 150MB an. Dari internet speed test tool, diperoleh angka 40kbps atau dia bilang bisa download 1MB dalam 3 menit.

Alat yang gue pake untuk koneksi adalah Sony Ericcson yg nyambung ke laptop dengan kabel USB dan SE M600i. di laptop tinggal dijalankan Sony Ericsson PC Suite dan ikuti Mobile Networking Wizardnya dan ngambil konfigurasi GPRS di henfon. Sebelumnya di henfon bikin koneksi data dulu sesuai dengan petunjuk dari Centrin.

BIsa juga buat download / save video dari youtube pake http://www.saveyoutube.com/ tapi untuk 20MB bisa 1.5jam an nunggu nya. Namanya jg unlimited ya jadi dikasih lambat gini. Lumayan ada kemajuan sedikit.

SLOWER INTERNET CONNECTION AFTER 1 WEEK

However after more than 1 week, i found the internet speed is slower than usual and my download session was broken many times. I notice that there is still data flow sent and received. What i suspected was the sent volume was higher than what is received. Sent volume was 8MB and received volume was less than 1MB in growth as i noticed.

I finally found there were some spyware, hijacker, and malware programs already installed in my laptop. Although the computer was already protected by anti virus program, the unlimited connection which i opened for all day and night had made the computer exposed to internet jungle, and in that time the connection became much more slower because the programs tried to upload local and private data to internet. I also noticed using netstat -a command, there are a lot non web port had been opened to internet. After i installed firewall software (e.g. PC Tools Firewall Plus), there are a lot port and services and lower level network connection blocked and life is much more safer.
