Indonesia unlimited mobile internet testing (GSM based)

Alhamdulillah . There are finally unlimited GSM mobile internet available in Indonesia for personal usage with affordable pricing, Rp 250-300thousand per month (22-25EUR, i love to use this more stable currency). The technology behind this is GPRS on GSM mobile network, 3G network. As long as you get Excelcom / XL signal as GSM provider. However its bandwith is still limited upto 64Kbps but the link is quite stable (I try Centrin - XL).

So get connected to Internet by your GSM phone/device, PDAphone and laptop everywhere! (still OK in busway transportation, but don’t try it around unsecure public place in Jakarta).

Udah dua hari gue pake produk unlimited wireless internet dari Centrin yg disebut Centrin-XL, hasilnya secara umum adalah

test juga dilakukan kemaren malem sambil menumpang mobil (ini dapet 3G terus) dan juga di rumah lokasi pinggiran Jakarta menggunakan M600i.

Tadinya seb orang awam mau gue tulis memuaskan sekali, tapi gue inget kecepatannya gak terlalu kenceng tapi cukuplah buat liat2 informasi. Lagian lumayan murah dg biaya bulanan 270rb per bulan (termasuk pajak) semasa promosi dan kurang dari 400rb setelah promosi. Sebagai perbandingan Singapur saya pernah subscribe Singnet 70SG per bulan (Rp 420rb)untuk unlimited mobile internet, atau paket lainnya dari M1 sekitar 20SGD(Rp 120rb) tapi limited volume 3GB.

Produk ini hasil kerjasama Centrin dan Excelcom GSM berbasis GPRS dan bisa juga 3G yang dicekek maksimum sampai 64Kbps (64 kilo bit per detik, atau 8KBps / 8 kilo byte per detik). Aktualnya ketika download gue bisa dapet sekitar 8-50Kbps. Dari meter data yang didownload/upload atau received/sent hari kemarin dg waktu koneksi total 9 jam, makan volume 150MB an. Dari internet speed test tool, diperoleh angka 40kbps atau dia bilang bisa download 1MB dalam 3 menit.

Alat yang gue pake untuk koneksi adalah Sony Ericcson yg nyambung ke laptop dengan kabel USB dan SE M600i. di laptop tinggal dijalankan Sony Ericsson PC Suite dan ikuti Mobile Networking Wizardnya dan ngambil konfigurasi GPRS di henfon. Sebelumnya di henfon bikin koneksi data dulu sesuai dengan petunjuk dari Centrin.

BIsa juga buat download / save video dari youtube pake http://www.saveyoutube.com/ tapi untuk 20MB bisa 1.5jam an nunggu nya. Namanya jg unlimited ya jadi dikasih lambat gini. Lumayan ada kemajuan sedikit.

SLOWER INTERNET CONNECTION AFTER 1 WEEK

However after more than 1 week, i found the internet speed is slower than usual and my download session was broken many times. I notice that there is still data flow sent and received. What i suspected was the sent volume was higher than what is received. Sent volume was 8MB and received volume was less than 1MB in growth as i noticed.

I finally found there were some spyware, hijacker, and malware programs already installed in my laptop. Although the computer was already protected by anti virus program, the unlimited connection which i opened for all day and night had made the computer exposed to internet jungle, and in that time the connection became much more slower because the programs tried to upload local and private data to internet. I also noticed using netstat -a command, there are a lot non web port had been opened to internet. After i installed firewall software (e.g. PC Tools Firewall Plus), there are a lot port and services and lower level network connection blocked and life is much more safer.
